Stories From My Past: Fat Dog
The thing about an average day at the office is that there's not much amusing or exciting to write about. So, we'll go with a quickie fat-dog story.
Growing up, my family had a small dog named "Sugar". I've written a little about Sugar previously. She was a perpetually hungry dog. The folks at the dog pound told us that Sugar would nurse from her momma, but then she would wander around to all the other momma dogs that were nursing, and she'd sneak in there for a snack as well.
The entire time we had Sugar (10+ years) we had to fight to keep her from being overweight. The only time she stopped eating was when there was no food around. She was a smart dog, too. She figured out what several different human words meant, as you'll see here in a bit.
One year, I had a birthday party. There was cake n' such on the table, so Sugar was begging for all she was worth. One of my buddies who was there looked down at her and said, "Aw... Sugar's a good girl." Sugar wagged her tail and turned on the charm. My buddy continued... "Hm... looks like you're getting fat!".
Sugar bit him.
She knew that the word "fat" was usually followed closely by the word "diet", and nothing good could come of that.
On a related note, it's really hard to discipline a dog when you're laughing so hard that tears are flowing.

Ah, Sugar! What a smart dog she was...
Wasn't she the one who ate a package of hot chocolate under the Christmas tree and got quite sick?
That's the one! It was actually an "Eskimo Joe's"-sized plastic cup, so there was a LOT of hot chocolate powder in there. She dang near croaked over that one. We were all shocked when she pulled through.
