Three Birthdays
Saturday, my Niece had her "swim" birthday party. We'd managed to miss her actual birthday, as well as both Nephews, so we brought presents along for everybody.
The "swim" part of things was at an indoor rec center, so the pool area was climate controlled. Holy buckets, was it ever. We walked in and the heat literally took my breath away. It had to be in the mid-90's in there, minimum. The effect was about as close to sauna as you can get without excessive steam and Seinfeld jokes.
And it was moderately cool outside, so we all had jeans, heavy shirts, jackets... nobody thought to wear (or bring) shorts. Only the kids were comfortable. In fact, as I sat dripping sweat and wiping fog from my glasses, little kiddos were jumping out of the pool and shivering.
We handed out presents to my nephews first. Little Nephew just turned three. He was so cute... we gave him a Spongebob Squarepants Connect 4 game. He opened it up and roared. "ITZA SPONGEBOB THINGY!"
I should have guessed. I could have just stapled some Spongebob pictures to a old sock and he would have been thrilled. He was so happy, he felt the need to elaborate a bit. "It's a Spongebob ha ha!" he explained, a sentence in which "ha ha" was clearly some form of noun.
We also had fun watching my Niece doing flips off the diving board. Badly. The backs of her legs were bright red from repeated impact with the water. She didn't seem to mind, although I'm sure Sunday was a different story. :)
